Overview

This stout trawler has an ENDTIE slip at Intrepid Landing Marina in Americas Cup Harbor that has an amazing open water view of the lights of downtown San Diego I have been on all the docks in the bay and this is one of the best views money can buy I am a liveabord so that a qualifying buyer could easily follow in my foot steps ! Bulletproof, backyard boat? That might sound like a concept of the distant past but not this tough trawler that started out as a rugged East Coast work boat but is all about relaxation and cruisingThe Thompson 44 was conceived by Rodney Thompson, a boat builder who in 1969 actually invented the machine that automatically splits rock shrimp and made it much more commercially viable to serve them up on dinner plates throughout the South.
Thompson Industries of Titusville, Florida was designing and building boats for the Gulf Coast commercial shrimping and fishing industry. The seaworthy and rugged construction of their vessels was legendary and it became clear that the overall hull design would be an ideal platform for cruising. Modifications soon produced the Thompson 32 and eventually the 44 with a total of about 100 yachting trawlers built in the late 1970s. The boats were delivered to their owners with hull, deck and engines but the interior was up to the individual and most of these boats landed in local boatyards for
the finishing work, hence the misnomer category backyard boats
Like many boats in the 70s, the Thompson trawler is a solid fiberglass construction with a hefty one inch of glass in the hull. Top speed for the 44 is about 10 knots with cruising speed around 9 knots. The burn rate is approximately 4 gallons at 8-9 knots. However, with 800 gallons of fuel, at 8 knots it is possible for her to have a range of 1,600-1,800 nautical miles which makes the boat a true bluewater voyager capable of easily handling the Caribbean or Mexico. Thank you for your interest.

Descriptions

Layout and Accomodations

The saloon is surrounded by large windows which make for a bright interior that features free-standing furnishings, a small built-in table and an inside helm station. Aside from natural light, a real selling point here was the 6 8 headroom. Five steps down on port is the galley. The owner s cabin is aft and down a few steps and includes a queen berth to port and a large head with a stall shower. Plenty of storage and hanging locker space round out this spacious cabin.

Systems and Mechanical

Below the saloon sole, a ladder leads to what could be either a huge engine room or a small dance hall with 5 3 headroom. Most of these boats were fitted with only one engine hence trawler . There is no shortage of space for additions such as a generator, watermaker and any other toys.

Wrap Up

The shippy 44s were produced between 1976 and 1979 when the factory burned down. Today, they can be found on the market for around $50,000. The molds were then purchased by Nelson Trawlers which still produce a variety of powerboats in Beaufort, North Carolina and you ll often see Nelson and Thompson owners at the same rendezvous
I ve heard people refer to the designer Rodney Thompson as Sir Rodney Thompson, and although I have no idea for what he may have been knighted, I m guessing he is a colorful and resourceful character. In 1994, he recognized that rock shrimp were being hunted to near extinction and began a campaign to stop destructive bottom trawling and instituted a management plan that was opposed by many who were making their living in shrimping industry. Today, he owns a successful restaurant called Dixie Crossroads Seafood in Florida.
